CAH Grant-Writing Fellowships

Funded in part by the MU Chancellor’s Fund for Excellence

The Center for Arts and Humanities, in conjunction with the Office of Research, the Arts & Science Dean’s Office, and the Provost’s Office, is pleased to announce a new Grant Writing Fellowship Opportunity to provide faculty a one semester release from teaching to seek external funding for research projects. The CAH staff and grant writer, Mary Barile, will be available to help CAH Fellows identify funding sources, write the grants, and submit external grant applications during the Fellowship semester (including help navigating the internal procedures for external grant applications from MU).

Deadline: Applications for the two Grant Writing Fellowships for 2009-2010 will be accepted until January 15, 2009.  Fellowship recipients will be notified by February 1, 2009.

Cycle of Awards: CAH invites applications for the CAH Grant Writing Fellowships. In cooperation with the applicant’s chair and/or dean, the release time for grant writing will be made possible by hiring substitute instructors to cover two courses per semester. These costs will be covered by the Office of Research and the Provost’s Office with funding transferred to your department. It is anticipated that one award will be made each semester, depending upon availability of funds and the strength of the applications.

Note: Only the faculty applicant on each proposal will receive a semester’s release from teaching. Each department will receive funding to hire two graduate instructors to cover courses; thus, different departments may receive different amounts of funding to cover two courses for one professor. These arrangements must be made via email between the Director of CAH, Bill Bondeson, and the Departmental Chair and/or Dean. The deadlines are intended to be far enough in advance of the Fellowship award to make adjustments to curriculum in the department.

Application Process: Proposals for the CAH grant writing fellowships should outline in five to eight (double-spaced) pages a general description of the project for which funding will be sought and the funding agencies most likely to fund it. CAH is especially interested in funding young faculty who are doing interdisciplinary and/or collaborative projects. Although this is not a requirement of your application, it will enhance your changes of receiving a Fellowship. The interdisciplinary and/or collaborative nature of the project must be made explicit in the proposal. The proposal should include the time frame for the project and list any interdisciplinary/collaborative faculty who will be involved in the project. These fellowships are intended to encourage faculty to cross disciplinary boundaries in new and innovative ways and to bring arts and humanities into creative research projects with other units such as social work, medicine, law, journalism, psychology, rural sociology, etc.

Review of Applications: Applications will be reviewed by a faculty committee that will determine the recipients of the fellowships.

Requirements for Submission of Grants: It is required that the external grants generated by the Fellow must be submitted to the funding agency either by the end of the fellowship period or for the next funding cycle of the funding agency.

Please note: This proposal for the CAH grant writing fellowship is NOT the same as the grant that will be submitted to the funding agency. This proposal is intended only to get release time to write an external grant.

Where to Apply: Proposals should be sent to the Center for Arts and Humanities, mucah@missouri.edu. Direct them to the attention of the Director, Bill Bondeson, and include "CAH Fellowship Application" in the subject line.

Approvals: Proposals must be accompanied or followed immediately by a letter of approval from the applicant’s chair and/or dean, specifically noting that the applicant will be released from teaching should she/he receive the fellowship award. Copies of the completed grant proposal must be deposited with the Center for Arts and Humanities.

Fellowship Awards: Grant funding for course release time for CAH Fellows will be deposited from the Office of Research directly into the departmental accounts for the successful Fellows. The department chair will be directed to use these funds to hire replacement instructors for the courses from which the Fellow has been released.
