CAH Grant Application Guidelines

New CAH Small Grant Guidelines - Effective July 1, 2008

The guidelines have changed. Please read the following information carefully before applying to CAH for funding. Check this site for periodic updates to these guidelines.

Faculty may receive only one grant in any fiscal year (July-July).

Only tenure-track faculty in arts and humanities (broadly defined) can receive CAH grants. If you have any questions, contact Director Bill Bondeson at mucah@missouri.edu.

DEADLINES for CAH grants will occur four times for 2009-10:

July 1, 2009
September 1, 2009
December 1, 2009
March 1, 2010

Any grant proposals we receive between deadlines will be added to those to be reviewed at the next deadline. Applications are to be made via email to mucah@missouri.edu. BE SURE TO PUT CAH GRANT REQUEST IN THE SUBJECT LINE OF THE EMAIL. Be certain your email includes your full name, rank, department, the date, all dates for events connected to funding requests, budgets, funds already secured.

Overview of Grants from CAH

The Small Grants Awards Program provides modest support for faculty research activities in the arts and humanities (broadly defined). These funds are intended to support interdisciplinary and collaborative faculty research and collaboration. They are also available to support individual research projects of faculty, including travel to disciplinary/professional meetings for delivering papers and/or presentations. Although the guidelines are not strict in only supporting young faculty, the intention of the small grants program is to provide a fairly simple process for research support for new faculty to the campus. However, ALL faculty may apply for funding. Faculty should also search the MU website carefully to determine how to apply for small grants through the Research Council and larger grants through both the Research Council and the UM Research Board (note: Research Council is a campus competition for funding; Research Board is a system competition. You will find links to the UM Research Board guidelines on the MU Office of Research website). Links to guide you toward these internal funding sources are on the right.

CAH will continue to offer $500 funding awards to faculty who seek support for research, publication subventions, image reproductions, exhibit expenses, conference presentations, etc. If you need some guidance about what has been funded in the past to faculty in the arts and humanities, please check the excel spreadsheet on this website for other awards that were given in previous years. The grant applications are still fairly simple; you must include proof that you are on the program for a specific conference or other documentation to support your request. Please note that if funding is limited in each of the three deadline competitions, younger untenured faculty requests will be funded before tenured faculty requests. This should not deter you from applying; it is only to inform you of our priorities to support young faculty in their first few years at MU.

Your application must include a full budget of all expenses you will incur for the event or project for which you are seeking funding as well as support you have already secured for this project/event. Try to get exact figures for flights, room costs, etc. rather than just guessing. It is much better if your application demonstrates collaborative, interdisciplinary work and indicates that you have tried to secure funding from other sources as well as CAH.

CAH will also help fund bringing speakers to the MU campus. Generally, these awards will be $500. CAH will no longer offer an award of $1,000 for conference or symposia costs. However, faculty who are planning for these collective activities can still apply to CAH for $500 funding to bring one or more speakers for the conference; other expenses, such as reception costs, housing, etc. incurred should be supported by department or other funding sources.

Important Note: All funding is in the form of reimbursements; however, applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for awards before travel. Awards should be granted prior to travel or presentations in order for you to receive your award.

YOU MUST KEEP AND PROVIDE RECEIPTS FOR ALL COSTS THAT WILL BE FUNDED BY CAH. In your award email, you will be directed to work with your departmental fiscal person for reimbursements. If your grant application is awarded, you will receive an email from the Director, Bill Bondeson, which will be copied to the Office of Research. After the CAH award is granted, the Office of Research Fiscal Agent (Barb Breen) will transfer the funds to your department accounts.

IMPORTANT NOTE: CAH will no longer fund student requests for funding. Graduate students should contact the Graduate School for funding resources for graduate student activities and travel to conferences; undergraduate students should contact the Center for Undergraduate Research for possible funding opportunities.

Criteria on which funding will be granted include the following:

  • Description of project is clear and concise
  • Relationship to work in arts and humanities is obvious
  • Project pertains to scholarly and research activities that will enhance applicant’s career
  • Detailed budget with CAH funding clearly marked as necessary for the project to proceed and other funding requested or granted.
  • Project/conference should take place during the semester in which application is made or the next one subsequent.
  • New and untenured faculty may take priority over tenured faculty in the competition if funds are limited in each competition period.

APPLICATIONS SENT BACK TO THE APPLICANT FOR MORE INFORMATION MAY BE EXTENDED INTO THE NEXT FUNDING ROUND.
